Description / Background

This war memorial is a white marble plaque in the shape of a shield, with names engraved and highlighted in gold.

The Western Champion, 23 March 1916 reported that a meeting had been held in Alectown to form a branch of the Parkes Returned Soldiers District Relief Association. The branch then set out to raise funds by organising concerts and sporting days. A large sporting programme was held in the village on 4 July 1917, which also included the unveiling of the roll.

The ceremony was reported in the Western Champion shortly after on 12 July 1917. The chair was occupied by Mr T.F. Westcott and Mr J.L. Whitmill (President of the Goobang Shire Council) performed the unveiling. The order of events included musical performances by local children and the Parkes Town Band and a luncheon. At the time of the unveiling 22 names were inscribed on the roll. The memorial was later moved to the Alectown Soldiers Memorial Hall and an additional four names were also added.
