The Cobar War Memorial was dedicated on Anzac Day, 25 April 2024. It is a light grey granite monument, which is 5m in length and 1.1m high. Weighing in at at approximately 7 tonne, it features black granite inserts on which are inscribed the names of 953 veterans who served in the First and Second World Wars, the Vietnam War and the Korean War. The memorial was designed with modularity in mind, allowing additional names to added in future years.
Planning for the memorial began in 2015. It was fully funded through private efforts, thanks to two Running On Empty Festivals (ROEF2018 and 2022), as well as many smaller fundraising events.
The ROEF2022 committee worked closely with Cobar Shire Council to make the project reality. It was built by McMurtrie and Co. from Orange and the footing of the memorial was funded and installed by Council.
Standing alongside the memorial is the Cobar Cenotaph, a pillar raised on three steps and faced with plaques inscribed with dedications to those who have served.
Both memorials are positioned within a commemorative precinct that includes paved surrounds, flower beds and flagpoles.
