Dripstone School of Arts First World War Roll of Honour Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This war memorial is a simple timber honour roll, which commemorates those who enlisted in the First World War and had a connection to the Dripstone School of Arts. The top of the board is decorated with geometric carvings and the names below are printed in neat gold lettering in two columns. The names are not listed alphabetically indicating that the roll was unveiled during the war. The Wellington Times, 1 March 1917 reported that Mr Shakespeare of Shakespeare and Co. had recently completed two honour boards: one for the Dripstone School of Arts and the other for the Wellington Baptist Church. Shakespeare and Co were cabinet makers and joiners based in Wellington and they completed many memorials in the district. The School of Arts roll was to be unveiled on the following Saturday, 3 March. Dripstone is a small rural community located some 13 kilometres from Wellington, NSW. Their School of Arts building was opened in 1908. After it closed, the roll was transferred to the Wellington Museum, where it is available for viewing when the building is open to the public.
