Dumaresq District Second World War Honour Roll Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The Dumaresq District Second World War Honour Roll is a large timber board, with decorative stepped edging. It includes the names of 60 veterans who served in the war, painted in gold across three columns. One name, C.L. Pearson, is surrounded by a box and marked as killed in action. The memorial was unveiled at the Dumaresq Hall on Saturday, 12 February 1949. The Armidale Express and New England General Advertiser, 14 February 1949, described the ceremony in detail. The function was attended by representatives of the Armidale RSL sub-Branch and 150 guests. Mr A.S. Cameron, president of the Dumaresq Soldiers' Welcome Home Association, explained "that the committee was formed in June 1940 and the district it covered extended to Boorolong, nearly to Yarrowick and to within three miles of Armidale. Every serviceman from the area had been given a send-off and 'welcome home'." He also shared that fundraising had contributed one hundred pounds for the memorial and after the piece was complete, the remaining 17 pounds was donated to Legacy. Guest speaker Mr Williams thanked the Dumaresq and Boorolong Welfare Society for leading the project to complete the memorial. The President of Dumaresq Shire, Mr J.T. Elliott, was given the special duty of unveiling the roll. Following the ceremony, a dance was held in the hall. The Dumaresq District is related to the Dumaresq Shire area, which surrounded the Armidale Municipal Council. The honour roll was removed from the Dumaresq Hall prior to its demolition, and relocated in the Armidale Folk Museum. The roll is available for viewing when the museum is open to the public.
