St Peters Anglican Cathedral First World War Book of Remembrance, Armidale Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This Book of Remembrance contains the names of men and women from the congregation of St Peters Cathedral in Armidale who served in the First World War. The first entries are those who died on active service abroad, followed by those who did return from war. The book has a decorative silver cover, which is removable, featuring a Canterbury cross with five dark blue gemstones, possibly opals. Around the cross are images of Australian gum leaves and a waratah flower at the bottom, in the shape of a laurel wreath. In her report titled 'A Shrine in Silver', archivist for the Cathedral Jean Newall notes that the pages are parchment and the names are written in calligraphic script and listed in alphabetical order. The book was completed by Mildred Creed, with assistance from Miss H.G. Hurst (Hirst) who did the illuminating and binding. Creed was a distinguished pioneer of wrought silver and enamel work in NSW. The piece was commissioned by Bishop Wentworth Shield, who also dedicated it in 1923. The book is housed in a glass-topped timber cabinet within the church that was constructed by Mr Philip Moyes, a son of Bishop J.S. Moyes.
