Charles Harry Nicholls was born in Port Macquarie and attended Port Macquarie Superior Public School. As a single Methodist carter, he enlisted as a private in the 2nd Battalion, 9th Reinforcement on 24 June 1915. His unit sailed from Sydney on 30 September 1915. Aged 19 years, he was killed in action at Pozieres, Somme Sector, France and was buried at the Railway Dugouts Burial Ground, Zillebeke, Belgium.
