Description / Background

The Canowindra Soldiers Memorial Hospital is set on a hill, within parklands. The foundation stone was laid on 26 May 1921. The hospital consists of several buildings from different periods. Within the main entrance foyer are two marble honour rolls from the First World War, unveiled during the opening ceremony for the hospital on 28 June 1922. Nearby are portraits of office bearers and small plaques detailing gifts and services donated to the hospital. Inside the main entrance gates is a well maintained field gun.

The Daily Telegraph (Sydney), 3 May 1920 reported the residents of Canowindra had decided to build a public hospital as a memorial to those who served. By that date, 1,000 pounds had been raised. It was to be built of brick with an iron roof and was to be centrally situated in the town. A public meeting for the Canowindra Soldiers' Memorial Hospital was held in the Oddfellows Hall on 23 May 1921 to arrange for the arrival of His Excellency the Governor on the following Thursday to lay the foundation stone. The Canowindra Star and Eugowra News, 30 June 1922 described the opening of the Memorial Hospital by the Minister for Health, the Hon. G.W. Oates, M.L.A. and C.M.G. The memorial tablets were also unveiled.

On 26 July 1922 the Public Hospitals Act 1908 was applied to the hospital.
