Description / Background

The memorial is a stone pillar, standing on a square, two-stepped base. A white marble statue of a soldier is positioned on top of the pillar. He has been sculpted at attention. The sides of the pillar are inscribed with an honor roll for the First and Second World Wars.

A separate inscription on the base of the memorial is dedicated to Private Alexander William Eagleton, who served and died in the Boer War. He is also commemorated on the nearby Alexander Eagleton Memorial Gates.

The unveiling ceremony took place on 24 September 1921, in front of the "largest gathering ever held in the district" (The Maitland Daily Mercury, 26 September 1921). Mr Robert Lyall, father to four enlistees, two who died in the war, performed the unveiling.

The memorial is located in the north-east corner of Clarence Town Memorial Park. It faces diagonally across the intersection of Queen and Grey Streets, towards St John's Anglican Church. The park is Lot A in DP 372728 and is entry number 71191 from the Geographical Names Board of NSW.
