Description / Background

Dark stained wooden honour board with gilt lettering. It was situated under the awning of platform one at Newcastle Station in a glass case. At the top, the Australian flag and Union Jack are crossed. Hanging below the main board is a wooden scroll with a verse.

The board was relocated from Honeysuckle Point Workshops, located on the Newcastle Harbour side of Civic Station, North of Hunter Street and west of Merewether Street.

Additional information by Sydney Trains:

This board lists the names of Honeysuckle Point Locoworks railways employees who served in the First World War written in gilt in two columns, encased behind a glass pane.

It is decorated with crossed Union Jack and Australian flags above, and a wooden scroll below with the words "Greater Love Hath No Man Than This, That A Man Lay Down His Life For His Friends".

It was unveiled by the Mayor of Newcastle Mr Kilgour on Empire Day 24 May 1915, and it originally contained 10 names which grew to 44 at the end of the war (NSW Railway & Tramways 2 June 1919).

It was originally displayed at the Honeysuckle Point Locoworks. After its closure, the board was relocated to Newcastle Station in c1930 where it hung for many years on the platform. After Newcastle Station was closed in 2014, the board was removed by Sydney Trains and relocated to storage at Hamilton Depot.
