Description / Background

The John Edmondsen VC Memorial clock was paid for by donations from all around the Commonwealth. The Clock commemorates the sacrifice of Corporal Edmondson who was awarded the first Victoria Cross of World War II.

The clock is mounted on a red granite base. On one side is the below inscription, and on the other sides are the names of the fallen from the Boer War, the First World War and the Second World War.

It was originally located at the south end of Macquarie Street in Liverpool, but had been vandalised, and was no longer in a prominent position. It was moved to its present location in the Liverpool City Library forecourt and re-dedicated on 28 September 1988.

Inscription

Erected to the memory of Corporal John Hurst Edmondson V.C. Killed in Action, Tobruk 14th April 1941. His actions throughout the operations were outstanding for resolution, leadership and conspicuous bravery.
