Michael Tognolini Peace Garden Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This memorial garden was established in memory of Trooper Michael Tognolini, who died on 20 April 1970 in the Vietnam War. A dedication plaque is located within the garden bed. It also commemorates the rededication of the nearby Burwood War Memorial Arch. Inscription Plaque BURWOOD MUNICIPAL COUNCIL This plaque was erected to commemorate the rededication of the War Memorial Arch and the construction of the Michael Tognolini Peace Garden on 11th August 1990 by Rear Admiral Peter Sinclair AO Governor of New South Wales. Alderman George Howe - Mayor. Greg Harragon - Town Clerk. MICHAEL TOGNOLINI PEACE GARDEN This garden was constructed to remember all those who gave their lives in the struggle for peace. The garden was named after a resident of Burwood Municipality who died in the service of his country in Vietnam on 20th April, 1970. WAR MEMORIAL ARCH The memorial arch which was unveiled by the Governor-General, Lord Forster on 25th April, 1923 lists the names of 937 men and four nurses who served in World War I. The names of 149 who died in this conflict are also listed. The arch was rededicated as a general war memorial to honour all Burwood residents who served and fell in the service of Australia.
