Stone cenotaph in front of the St John's Anglican Church building. Donated by Mr Whitehurst whose son was a fighter pilot during the Second World War. Dedicated in 1946.

Inscription

 

Side 1 inscription:

To the glory of God. Erected in memory of F/Sgt Douglas Arthur Whitehurst. Aged 20 years. Fighter Pilot. R.A.A.F. Killed in India, 16th May 1944. 2nd World War 1939-45. Per Ardua ad Astra.

Side 1 plaque:

In memory of former members of the Air Training Corps who lost their lives in defence of Australia 1941 - 1945.

Side 2 inscription:

In everlasting tribute to those parishioners of St. John's Church of England Ashfield who served in the fighting forces of Australia during the 2nd World War 1939 - 1945.

Side 3 inscription:

The the glory of God. In memory of parishioners of St John's Church Ashfield who made the supreme sacrifice during the 2nd world war 1939 - 1945.

They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.

Plaque 1:

The ashes of Arthur Stephen Whitehurst, Father of F/Sgt. Douglas A. Whitehurst and donor of this cenotaph who died 26th June, 1947. Rest Beneath this Tablet.
