Anderson Park War Memorial

A brick monument and wall with multiple plaques, located in shady Anderson Park, adjacent to the former Young train station. A panel describes the service and career of Lt. Col Anderson VC MC after whom the park is named.

Excerpt from the Report on the Community Based Heritage Study of the Young Shire October 2008:

Anderson Park and the Anderson Park War Memorial recognise people of the district who served in the Second World War. They also recognise the service and achievements of Lieutenant Colonel Charles Anderson VC. The park and obelisk have state historical association significance and state representativeness.

The Anderson Park Memorial has direct associations with the role of the Young district in the Second World War. It is also representative of the development of the Town of Young during the mid 20th century and occupies a prominent position in front of the Young Railway Station. The obelisk is a fine example of Art Deco design. The memorial has local historical, aesthetic and social significance and a high level of integrity.

Young Station forms part of the Blayney–Demondrille branch line. The line was owned and operated by the NSW Government until 2004 when the Australian Rail Track Corporation (A.R.T.C.) became responsible for operations over the line. It is now mainly used for grain haulage. The Lachlan Valley Railway, based at Cowra, also operates heritage and tourist trains over the line. The memorials lie within the heritage listing boundary of the Young Railway Station Group and is managed by ARTC.
