Description / Background

This memorial is a granite monument, consisting of a pillar positioned on a plinth. Attached to the front of the pillar are two brass emblems. The first is the Australian Army Rising Sun Badge. Below this is the Ashoka Chakra, the 24-spoke wheel, which is the centre symbol on the Indian flag. Towards the bottom of the pillar is a decorative carved border, featuring a floral design.

On the front face of the plinth is a brass plaque, which is inscribed with the dedication. The plaque lists 12 veterans from the Indian-Australian community who served in the First World War. The inscription also pays tribute to, remembers, and recognises other Indian soldiers who served at Gallipoli during this war, in later conflicts, and peacekeeping missions.

The memorial is 1.5 metres tall. It sits on a concrete slab, which measures 3.5 metres by 2.2 metres. Flanking the memorial are two 5-metre flagpoles.

The monument was unveiled by Mr Julian Leeser MP, Federal member for Berowra, on 10 November 2018; however, the inscription gives the date as 11 November. It is located in Greenway Park in Cherrybrook, NSW, near the Cherrybrook Community and Cultural Centre.

Notes about the veterans:

All the veterans listed were born in India. Eleven have the surname 'Singh' and the twelfth lists 'Singh' as a second name. It is possible they are related in some way.

Two of the veterans listed were killed in action, two were never issued with service a number and one enlisted with an assumed name. For further details on each veteran, click 'view' in the right-most column in the veterans table below.
