Description / Background

The Ariah Park War Memorial is a freestone pillar, surmounted by a white marble statue of a First World War Australian infantryman. Attached to the sides of the pillar are white marble tablets, inscribed with an honour roll for the Great War. There are also two tablets listing the names of places in which Australians served, such as Bullecourt and Gallipoli.

The memorial was unveiled on 15 October 1919, by Chaplain William McKenzie. At the time, there were 139 names on the pillar. Honour roll tablets for the Second World War and Vietnam have been added to the base of the memorial at a later date, bringing the number of names listed to around 290.

The memorial stands on a three-step platform and is surrounded by a low fence, consisting of 12 posts joined by chain. A flagpole also stands on the north side of the memorial.

The stairs of the platform were cleaned and repaired in 2022. The works were supported by a Community War Memorials Fund grant from the NSW Government.
