Description / Background

In the west wall of the sanctuary of Ashfield Presbyterian Church is the Great War Supreme Sacrifice stained glass window. It consists of two tall and narrow windows, each with a different inscription and image. Above these is a smaller decorative window, shaped like a six petal flower. The window on the left depicts a Knight carrying a flag with a cross emblem and the one on the right shows Christ blessing a kneeling soldier. In the bottom pane of both is the Australian Commonwealth Military Forces emblem and an inscription.

Attached to the wall below the window is a rectangular brass plate bearing a dedication and honour roll of those who fell in the First World War. The names are listed in four columns and are incised and blackened.

The window was dedicated during an Anzac Day service at the church on 24 April 1921. Access to it is restricted to the opening hours of the church.
