The monument was originally for soldiers from the First World War. At a later date names of those involved in other conflicts have been added on the steps. The monument sits within a red tiled area surrounded by a white fence and has a single flag pole. It is referred to locally as 'the cenotaph' or 'the honour stone'. Previously located at the corner of Beach Road and Orient Street, the memorial was moved to Clyde Street around 2008. It was updated structurally and had additional veteran names attached.
