Description / Background

This war memorial is a solid timber honour roll, comprised of a central board and two wing boards. It lists the names of students of Braidwood Public School who served during the First World War, including five nurses. The central board is approximately 1.5 metres high by 1 metre wide. The two wing sections are approximately 0.75 metres high by 0.40 metres wide.

The memorial was funded by the Braidwood Public School Parents & Citizens' Association and was unveiled on Anzac Day, 25 April 1920. The event was reported in The Braidwood Review and District Advocate on 27 April. The unveiling was performed by Mr. Middleton, Inspector of Schools.

The memorial is located in a passageway within the school, now known as Braidwood Central School.

Statement of Significance, provided by Mr Bruce Keeley, Braidwood RSL sub-Branch, February 2023:

The Braidwood Central School Honour Boards have great local significance to [the school] and to the Braidwood community in general. Many of the names on the honour roll are of men who were part of pioneering families in this district and some descendant families still live here. A number of those listed never returned. There are five nurses listed as well.
