Description / Background

The memorial is a bronze honour roll for the First World War. It is inscribed with 14 names, which are divided into four sections: those who served, returned from active service, invalided from camp, and volunteered.

The roll was made by the Wunderlich Company of Sydney, well-known makers of decorative bronze memorials. It has stylised features and a high level of craftsmanship that is typical of their work.

The roll was unveiled on the night of 22 January 1923 at the Brodies Plains Hall. The ceremony was conducted by Mr Stammer and the unveiling was performed by Mrs Fowler, mother of Aubrey Arthur Fowler who was the first soldier from the district to be killed in the war (Inverell Times, 23 January 1923). As a Gunner in the 10th Field Artillery, he died of wounds on 8 January 1917. He is listed in the first section of the roll.

The roll has since been moved to the Inverell Pioneer Village RSL Museum. Access to it is restricted to the opening hours of the museum and village.
