Description / Background

The Cootamundra War Memorial is a marble column, with a gilded honour roll the First World War inscribed into the sides of the base. This memorial was unveiled on 11 November 1923.

Behind this column is a brick Wall of Remembrance, bearing multiple plaques and honour rolls for the Second World War and subsequent conflicts. The wall was dedicated in 1990, and plaques have been added since that time.

Behind the wall are three stone memorials. The first memorial pays tribute to the Vietnam servicemen and servicewomen who served in South Vietnam between 1962 - 1972. The memorial is constructed of a dark stone, with a gold inscription and a marble cross, highlighting an iconic photo from the Vietnam War.

The second monument commemorates the Korean War and is constructed from a granite base, supporting two bronze plaques, including an honour roll.

The third monument is in commemoration of an Allepo Pine from the original Lone Pine on Gallipoli grown in the jubilee year 1965, and planted by Mr and Mrs Robert Dear in memory of their children who served during the Second World War. This Lone Pine died in 2018 and a new Lone Pine, which was also grown from the original Lone Pine on Gallipoli, was planted in September 2018 by members of the Cootamundra RSL sub-Branch.

Anzac Day ceremonies are held at the memorial each year, consisting of a dawn service, followed by a mid-morning service and street parade.
