Cowra First World War Memorial Grove Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The memorial houses approximately 80 native trees in a grove on the heritage-listed site of Cowra POW Camp #12. This grove was planted by the families of the personnel of the 100 military personnel who did not return from the First World War in their memory, as well as in remembrance of 100 years since the end of the conflict. There is also a Lone Pine, donated and planted in the grove. A sign is still being developed and will list the names of those who did not return from service, as well as photographs. The Coe family was represented in the First World War service by all of its four brothers, all of whom were lost in the conflict. Dedication took place on 25 May 2019; the event was opened by the Mayor and the President of the Cowra RSL Sub-Branch, Steve Overman. Relatives of the 64 personnel were invited by Council to the event. The memorial grove was designed by Cowra Council. While Council recognised 64 service personnel who did not return, further research found approximately 100. The concept is to plant a section of native vegetation, where each tree represented one personnel. The grove is located off Evans Street on the right, before the pedestrian gates.
