Fern Hill Public School and Residents First World War Honour Roll, Inverell Middle Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This war memorial is a timber honour roll for the First World War. It has a classical designed pediment at the top and decorative timber posts and ledges. The whole is enclosed in a glass cabinet. The roll lists 28 ex-pupils of Fern Hill Public School and 19 local residents, totalling 47 veterans. Their names are printed in gold lettering on a black background. Ten names from the full list are marked with a gold cross, indicating they fell during the war. The roll was unveiled at the school on 21 November 1919. The function was described in detail in the Inverell Times on 25 November. Inverell's Mayor, Ald. G. B. Ring, occupied the chair and was supported by Mr A. T. Hapgood and Evangelist H. G. Payne. Hopgood and Payne were both speakers at the ceremony and Miss Mackie was asked to unveil the memorial. The Fern Hill Public School opened in September 1881 and closed in June 1944. At a later date, the roll was relocated to the Inverell Pioneer Village, where it is on display in the Oakwood Hall Great War Memorial Extensions building. Access to view it is restricted to the opening hours of the village and the hall. Inscription Public School & Residents Fern Hill 1914 1919 Honour Roll.
