Forbesdale First World War Roll of Honor Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This honour roll is a simple timber board, with a classic pediment shape and carved columns either side. It lists the names of those from the small rural community of Forbesdale who served in the First World War, printed in gold down the middle of the board. Forbesdale is located near Gloucester and its public school was opened in May 1909 and closed in December 1969. The Gloucester Advocate, 14 April 1920, published a detailed report of a 'Welcome Home' function and picnic and sports day held at Forbesdale on 9 April 1920. Mr Herb Middlebrook, president of the local Parents and Citizens' Association, acted as chairman and welcomed the returned soldiers. Sister Cowan said they she felt honoured to be included in the welcome home, thanking the Red Cross and Soldiers' Comforts for the gifts provided to soldiers and nurses. At the conclusion of the event, Mrs Wellard Senior was asked to unveil the honour roll. The proceedings concluded with a dance that evening. The newspaper also stated that the returning soldiers saw service in Palestine and France and Sister Cowan in Salonica, 3rd Australian Army Hospital in Dartford England and in Dublin. The honour roll was later moved to the Gloucester History Museum. Inscription Roll of HonorForbesdale[Names] Related links Forbesdale.
