Gordon Brook Station First World War Honour Roll, Grafton Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The memorial is a photographic honour roll commemorating employees from Gordon Brook Station, located high above the Clarence River, who served in the First World War. The honour roll consists of individual photographs of 17 veterans from the Station and is surrounded by a decorated beaded wooden frame. A hand drawn scroll is positioned centrally at the bottom of the honour roll with the name of the Station written above the two crossed flags of Australia and the Union Jack. Many professional photographers took photographs of First World War servicemen as gifts for the family. The soldiers who returned from the war found that the manager of Gordon Brook Station, George G Cory, had kept their old jobs for them. Later in 1919, the station manager put on a picnic sports day as a welcome home for the soldiers which was attended by over 200 people. Mr Cory also had a tree planted at the homestead in memory of each soldier from the station who had enlisted. The honour roll would have been unveiled at Gordon Brook Station. It is now located in the Schaeffer House Museum and is available for viewing during opening hours.
