Description / Background

This war memorial is an ornately carved timber honour roll for ex-pupils of the Greenridge Public School, and other district residents, who served in the First World War. It is made of polished cedar and measures 4 feet 6 inches by 3 feet 3 inches. It features two timber shelves, located at the top and bottom of the board and has carved columns on each side of the central panel. Painted at the top of the panel are two sets of crossed flags, which flank the name of the school, printed in gold. The final decorative element is a painted scroll, which highlights the words 'Roll of Honor'.

The memorial was purchased from furniture company Jones and Brewster of Casino, NSW. It was unveiled on 19 September 1919. The ceremony took place during peace celebrations and was reported in The Richmond River Express and Casino Kyogle Advertiser on 30 September. Mr L. Pearson presented the Commonwealth Peace medals to the children and Mrs Pearson, senior, unveiled the roll. At the time of the unveiling, the board contained the names of 56 veterans who had served, including some who had made the supreme sacrifice. The article concluded the roll "is without doubt a very fine piece of work and does the firm every credit."

The board was originally displayed at Greenridge Public School, which was a provisional school from January 1871 to May 1880 and a public school from May 1880 to December 1974. After the school closed, the board was moved to the Greenridge Memorial Hall. It is available for viewing when the hall is open for public occasions.

Note: the school is referred to as Green Ridge (two words) on the memorial.
