Description / Background

This First World War memorial is a sandstone column, with marble plaques inset into each of the four sides. On top is a marble soldier holding a flag. The soldier is facing south-east. There are three flagpoles around the memorial. It is located on the south-east corner of Gregson Park in Hamilton.

This monument was erected by the citizens of Hamilton in honour of our soldiers who fought in the Great War of 1914 - 1919.

The flood lighting of the monument was officially switched on by The Mayoress Mrs J.E. Wiggings 11/11/1937
