Description / Background

The memorial is a polished timber honour roll dedicated to ex-pupils from Gulgong Public School who served in the First World War. The top of the honour roll features a carved wreath with two small supporting shelves above the names and one shelf at the bottom of the board. Timber columns frame either side of the honour roll. The names and fate of 82 former pupils and teachers are written in gold lettering and listed across two columns on the board.

In May 1924 new classrooms and alterations to the school were opened by the Minister for Education. The Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative, 8 May 1924, described the ceremony in detail and reported that 'The soldiers' magnificent honor roll, which the P and C Association presented to the school four years ago, has been given a prominent place on the wall immediately in front of the entrance doors'.

The Gulgong Public School Honour Roll was unveiled and dedicated at the school in 1920. It is now located in the military room of the Gulgong Pioneers Museum.
