Description / Background

This marble honour roll features a scroll with the names of former Gunnedah Public School students who served in the First World War. It is decorated with the British and Australian flags at the top, flanking the Rising Sun military emblem. It also features the tesselated tiles symbolism and the classic columns from the Masonic Lodge Order. Apart from the off-white marble, the memorial also features coloured granite.

The monument was unveiled by the Gunnedah Mayoress Mrs McDonagh in August 1920. On 25 August 1920, the Sydney Mail  published a photograph of the roll. After its unveiling, the names from R Coote to G E Smith were added.

The memorial was created by prominent stonemason M.W. Hardy of Narrabi, NSW. Michael William Hardy was born on 2 August 1867. His honour rolls often featured scrolls and symbolism from the Masonic Lodge Order. He developed his monumental masonry company based on the use of the distinctive grey-white marble from a quarry near Warialda, NSW. He developed a number of honour rolls throughout the North West and New England Regions. He died in Narrabri in December 1950.

The honour roll is still located at the front of the school building. The building is now occupied by the Carinya Christian School, as the Gunnedah Public School has moved to a new site.
