Description / Background

These two timber honor rolls for the First World War (pictured top) and Second World War (pictured bottom) were originally on the walls of the Kahibah Soldiers' Memorial Hall. In recent times they were transferred to the Kahibah Public School for display and safekeeping. The school has a well-developed website featuring detailed information about the rolls, as well as a additional details for each recorded name.

The Newcastle Sun, 9 October 1925 reported that the third anniversary of the erection of the Hall was to be held the following week, when the unveiling of the First World War was to take place. A large group attended the function on 17 October and the Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners' Advocate, 20 October reported that Mrs Lennard performed the unveiling on behalf of Mrs Miller and Mr Jack Fallins, two of the oldest residents of the town.

In June 1947 a public meeting organised by the Memorial Hall Committee and Progress Association was held in the Hall. It was decided to ask the Government for financial assistance to construct a roll for the Second World War (Newcastle Morning Herald, 13 June 1947). Several years past before the project was completed and the unveiling event was advertised for 26 May 1950 (Newcastle Sun, 24 May 1950).
