Lithgow's Fallen Heroes War Memorial Middle Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The memorial is a rough, black granite pillar with inscriptions and an honour roll for the First World War on polished black marble tablets, highlighted in gold paint. An additional plaque has been added to acknowledge and commemorate those who have fallen in other wars. On top of the memorial are two statues of soldiers, made of white marble, one fallen holding his forehead and the other is standing over him giving protection. The memorial was unveiled at a ceremony in Queen Elizabeth Park on 13 October 1918 before a very large gathering. The Mayor, Alderman Pillans, presided over the event and Mrs Callaghan, who had lost three sons in the conflict, unveiled the memorial. Next to the memorial, but within the fenced enclosure, is a Second World War Field Gun painted 'Desert Tan', dedicated in honour of those who served in the Second World War. The memorial was re-dedicated on 26 October 2007. Note on veterans' names: Due to the engraving quality on the tablets, there was some questionable accuracy with the 'C' and 'G' lettering.
