Description / Background

The memorial is a printed, illuminated, and handwritten honour roll on paper in a timber frame which commemorates a teacher, former students of Millwood Public School, and boys from the district who served in the First World War. The top of the honour roll features a painted banner containing the dedication below two crossed swords and the Australian, American and Union Jack flags. The list of veteran names is written in three columns below.

The Coolamon-Ganmain Farmers' Review, 6 July 1917, reported that a sum of £3 10s was raised at a dance in aid of the Millwood School Fund and an honour roll for the men who served. By mid-1918 further funds had been raised and a committee of residents accepted the offer of John Sands Printing Company in Sydney to supply the honour board at a cost of £6 10s (Coolamon-Ganmain Farmers’ Review, 17 May 1918).

Four months later, the Coolamon-Ganmain Farmers' Review, 20 September 1918, published the names listed on the board and advertised that the honour roll was on display in the Hunter Bros window in Wagga Wagga prior to installation in the school.

Millwood School was created as a House to House School in February 1887 and closed as a Public School in December 1966. The memorial is now located in the Coolamon RSL Museum.
