Mitchell Park Memorial Gates, Merewether Middle Image Image Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The Mitchell Park Memorial Gates in Merewether, NSW, consist of four pillars, joined with ornamental metal gates. The pillars are faced with honour rolls and tablets. The two centre pillars are surmounted by marble busts. A solider is on the left and a sailor is on the right. The dates for the First World War are inscribed at the bottom of the two outer pillars. They are given as 1914 and 1919. The memorial is located at the Mitchell Street entrance to the park, directly opposite Robert Street. Inscription Tablet 1 This memorial was unveiled by Brig. Gen J. Paton C.B. C.M.G. V.D. on the 12th March 1921. Ald R. Wells Esq President, W. R. Adamson Esq Secretary, Ald J. Campbell Esq Treasurer, G.F. Turner Esq Architect. Tablet 2 Erected by the citizens of Merewether, in commemoration of the services and sacrifices of the men who fought and fell in the world's greatest war. War declared 4th August 1914. Armistice signed 11th November 1918 Peace declared 28th June 1919.
