Description / Background

This roll of honour is a large dark-timber board, with three panels. It includes the names of 202 ex-pupils of Moree Superior Public School, who enlisted in the First World War.

At the Parents and Citizen's Association Meeting held on 10 July 1916, the president "suggested that some tablet should be erected in the school in memory of the lads who had fallen in the war" (Moree Gwydir Examiner, 11 July 1916). The following month, Mrs Kempe, a member of the Association, suggested residents be asked to pay for one or more names on the board. The motion was accepted and she offered to pay for four names, at a cost of one shilling and three pence per name.

That November, a further meeting of the Association was held and it was decided to dedicate the roll on 14 December at the Empire Theatre. Mr Robinson's tender for the lettering of £15 was accepted for 170 names.

On 21 November, the Moree Gwydir Examiner published a list of proposed names for the roll. The list included the annotation 'K' for killed and 'G' for Gallipoli, and Principal Mr Newling asked for the names to be checked for omissions.

The unveiling was well-attended, including children from the school, their parents, friends, and the Lone Pine Band. The ceremony was recorded in detail in the Examiner the following day. The roll was rededicated in March 1921.

Access to the memorial is restricted, as it is located in the school's Assembly Hall.
