Scone Memorial Swimming Pool and War Memorial

This war memorial swimming pool was dedicated on 1 October 1960, in honour of those who served in the First and Second Wars. In front of the entrance to the pool is a memorial pillar bearing an honour roll for those same conflicts, as well as the Korean War. 

The pool is located between Parker Street and the New England Highway.

This description of the pillar is from The Scone Advocate, 30 September 1960:

Standing in front of the entrance gates to the Scone War Memorial Olympic Swimming Pool is a commemorative separate memorial, which was designed by Mr. B. L. Armitage, of Scone, in collaboration with the Scone Shire Council, which has been erected by the firm of local stone masons, B. L. Armitage and Co.

It consists of a re­inforced concrete base 12 feet, square, with a second base of sandstone 7 feet square. The roughcast obelisk is made of South Australian black granite and is 9 feet high and tapers from 2 feet 6 inches at the base to 2 feet square at the top. Inserted in the four re­cessed faces are four polished black granite panels each 5 feet by 1 foot 3 inches.

One of these panels carries the commemorative inscription and on the other three faces are in­scribed the names of 152 Scone and district soldiers who died on active service in World Wars I and II and in Korea. On the four faces above the polished panels, bronze laurel wreaths with torches have been fasten­ed. The aggregate weight of the whole structure is approximately 10 tons. In a setting of future lawns and gardens, and backed by willow and eucalypt trees, the memorial strikes a simple, dignified and impressive note, and is a fitting re­minder that the swimming pool serves as a memorial to those who gave their lives in both World Wars.
