South African War Memorial, Millers Point Middle Image Image Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This war memorial is a sandstone-block pillar, with a bronze honour roll plaque attached to one side. The pillar stands in the centre of a low, semi-circular stone wall and is surrounded by a circular paved area. The plaque lists the names of 15 units who served in the South African (Boer War), their commanding officers, and related dates. The memorial was dedicated on 2 June 1940 by Major-General C.F. Cox, who is listed on the plaque. The memorial is situated on Observatory Hill at Millers Point, in Sydney's historic Rocks district. Commemorative services are held on site and a hook has been installed below the plaque to hang wreaths. In front of the memorial is a 75mm Krupp gun, dating from the 1890s, which was moved to the site at a later date.
