Description / Background

The memorial is a tapered stone obelisk commemorating those from Springdale who fell in the First World War. It is set within a fenced area situated in a pleasant rural environment In Springdale, a village about 16.5 km east of Temora in the Parish of Gundibindyal. The original polished trachyte obelisk set on a polished granite base was unveiled on 25 September 1921. It was rebuilt in 2003 and rededicated on 11 November 2003.

In May 1920 a public meeting was held to discuss the erection of a soldiers’ memorial in Springdale with a decision to construct a memorial at a cost of £120 (Cootamundra Herald, 18 May 1920). A list was opened at the meeting and the sum of £50 was collected.

Twelve months later, the Cootamundra Herald, 17 May 1921, reported that the Soldiers' Memorial Monument Committee had met to select a site for the memorial and a decision was made to erect it in a prominent position in the Recreation Reserve. At that stage the contractor, S H Dickson of Cootamundra, had the work in hand.

The memorial was unveiled at a ceremony on 25 September 1921 in front of a large gathering presided over by Mr O E Cullen. Speeches were presented by several dignitaries, including Mr Hugh Main MLA and the Mayor of Temora, Alderman W Callaghan. The memorial was unveiled by Mrs James Penfold, who was the first to send a son to the war from Springdale (Cootamundra Herald, 27 September 1921).
