Description / Background

This war memorial is a polished cedar honour roll, which is located inside St Paul's Anglican Church in Gloucester. The board lists the names of those from the parish who served in the Second World War. They are listed in alphabetical order in gold print and those killed in action are marked with an asterisk.

Special mention is made of Clause Preston Dean, who was accidentally killed on 9 October 1946. Dean, who was from Gloucester, died in a private hospital in Denman following fall from a motor truck. Details of his life were published in the Gloucester Advocate on 11 October. He had served two years in the A.I.F.

By 24 October 1947, the honour roll was completed and names inscribed. The Parochial Council asked for all names to be checked so that no one was left off (Gloucester Advocate, 24 October 1947). The roll was dedicated later in the year, on 14 December. At that stage it contained 172 names. Following evensong, before a very large congregation, the service of unveiling was held with the Prayer of Dedication. The Rector then called upon Mr and Mrs Dean to unveil the memorial (Gloucester Advocate, 23 December 1947). Newspaper coverage of the event also mentioned that an additional war memorial, in the form of gates, was to be dedicated at a special service to be held on the following Sunday night.
