St Peter's Anglican Church First World War Roll of Honour, Bendolba Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The memorial is a wooden honour board in two panels hung on the wall above the pulpit in St Peter's Anglican Church, Bendolba, 9 km north of Dungog. The memorial commemorates 51 members of the community who served in the First World War The honour roll was dedicated and unveiled at a ceremony officiated by The Venerable Archdeaon Luscombe in St Peter's Church on Saturday 9 December 1916. The ceremony was attended by residents of Bandon Grove, the district of Bendolba, and Dungog. A full report of the event was published in the Dungog Chronicle: Durham and Gloucester Advertiser, 12 December 1916. The honour roll was unveiled by Mr W Brown MLA, after which Archdeacon Luscombe dedicated the honour roll and addressed the gathering. He then presented an illuminated address to Mr and Mrs Edwards and family who were leaving the district. The Edwards had lost their son, Trooper Francis Edwards, who was killed in action on 20 May 1915 at Quinn's Post, Gallipoli. The newspaper account stated that 43 names were listed on the honour roll, with the name of H S Grimwade to be added at a later date. Notes on veterans' names: Status codes for all deceased veterans have been taken from information on the Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour and Commemorative Roll, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission database and National Archives records. Private Hugh Stanley, a theological student enlisted as a private in the 30th Battalion, A Company, on 20 September 1915. As a Lieutenant, he was awarded a Mention in Despatches. On the memorial: F Luttrell is given as F Lutterel. Frank Luttrell was a resident of Dungog. However there are no records of deceased veterans named Lutterel in the First World War. A V Haggarty is given as V Haggarty. Inscription ROLL OF HONOUR Gift of the Residents of Bandon Grove, Bendolba, and Neighbourhood.
