Tallewang Iron Mines First World War Roll of Honour Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The memorial is a paper honour roll dedicated to the miners from the Tallewang Iron Mines who enlisted in the First World War. The honour roll sits in a plain timber frame and is hand drawn in the form of a scroll. The names of 18 servicemen are listed in two columns with decorative sprigs of rosemary painted on either side of the scroll. Tallewang, now known as Tallawang, is located 30 kilometres north of Gulgong. The Tallewang Iron Mines opened in the area in the early 1900s but the mine closed in February 1927. The honour roll was unveiled at the Tallewong Iron Mines in September 1916. The mine manager, Mr G Farrow, presided over the event. Mr A Baldwin was asked to unveil the memorial, but deferred the honour to Mrs Rutherford whose three sons were at the front (Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative, 28 September 1916). The honour roll is now located in the military room at the Gulgong Pioneers Museum and is available for viewing when the museum is open to the public.
