Description / Background

This war memorial is a timber honour roll for the First World War. It is made of polished cedar and measures 3 feet 10 inches by 2 feet 3 inches. The top of the board is decorated with a delicate floral design, reminiscent of the Rising Sun emblem of the Australian Imperial Force.

The roll lists 52 names, which are printed in gold across two columns. Nine names are marked with a cross, indicating they were killed in action or otherwise died as a result of their service. The roll was made by J. M. Holston and Co., who had a furniture store in South Murwillumbah. It was unveiled on 31 August 1917 at Tumbulgum's Literary Institute, now known as the Tumbulgum Hall. The Tweed Daily, 3 September 1917, published a detailed report on the well-attended ceremony. Chairman Mr R. J. Wright opened the proceedings, which included singing and musical performances. During an interval, Mrs A. A. Brown unveiled the roll, which contained only 38 names at the time.

Access to the memorial is restricted to the opening hours of the hall.
