Wollomombi District Second World War Honour Roll Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This war memorial is a timber honour roll for the Second World War. It has a distinctive shape, featuring a stepped design on all four sides. This stepping is typical of elements and aesthetics seen in 1940s cabinets and furniture. The printing on the board is well executed. At the top is a small Rising Sun emblem, painted in gold. The names are also in gold and are printed in two columns down the centre of the board. They are not in alphabetical order. Four names are grouped together at the top of the first column. Three of those listed are marked as 'Killed in Action' and the fourth is marked as 'Accidentally killed'. On the base of the board are the words 'For God, King and country', which is more common on First World War memorials. The origins of this roll are unknown. It is located in the Sauer Memorial Hall, formerly known as the Wollomombi Oddfellows Hall, which was opened in 1915. After the Second World War, the community raised money to purchase the hall and it was re-named the Sauer Memorial Hall, after the Sauer family. The roll is available to view during socials held on site.
