Woolbrook Public School First World War Roll of Honour Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The Woolbrook Public School First World War Roll of Honour is a polished timber honour board. It features a classical pediment at the top, which is decorated with carved acanthus scrolls and coloured British and Australian national flags. It also has supporting timber shelves at the top and bottom. The bottom section of the board includes the names of 18 ex-scholars from the school who served in the war, with four marked as killed. The memorial was designed and made by William Fraser of Hamilton. It was unveiled at the school on 31 August 1919, in front of scholars and ex-scholars, parents and friends (Daily Observer, 29 August 1919). Shortly after the event, the Daily Observer, 16 September 1919, published a report on the 18 veterans, including the number who had fallen and those invalided or wounded. It also noted that four were uninjured but still to return. It also listed the numbers of awards granted to the men. The article described the honor board as "very handsome" and explained that hanging on either side of the board were two frames showing the photos of the ex-scholars. The memorial is available to view when the school is open to the public.
