Description / Background

This war memorial is a timber roll of honour, which lists 40 veterans from the Young Wallsend district who served in the Second World War. Their names are printed in gold, across three columns in the centre of the board. They are divided into two groups, comprising 37 men and three women. All 40 veterans survived the conflict.

The roll is mounted inside a timber cabinet, with a glass front. The cabinet measures 3 feet (900mm) wide and 3 feet 6 inches (1080mm) tall. It is unknown if the cabinet is part of the original design or was added later.

The roll was unveiled at Smith's Hall on 4 November 1949 by Mrs T. Aubin, President of Young Wallsend Farewell and Reception Committee (Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners' Advocate, 5 November 1949).

At some stage, the roll was moved to the Edgeworth Memorial Neighbourhood Centre. It hangs on the back wall of the stage, alongside the Young Wallsend Great War Roll of Honor. Access to it is restricted to the opening hours of the centre.

Note on veterans: J. Holden and J. W. Smith are unable to be traced/identified with links to Young Wallsend or the surrounding area, on either the A.I.F. Project or National Archives of Australia databases.
