Description / Background

This memorial is made up of several sections: 

  • At the front of the memorial, there is a brick pillar surrounded by a rosemary garden. The pillar has the name of the memorial and several marble plaques. At the top of the pillar there is a light.
  • A nearby sunken pool of remembrance has two levels with a small water fall in the middle. The pool is surrounded by a low brick wall. In the high section of the pool is a large pile of bush rocks with a white cross at the top, symbolizing a battlefield grave with a cairn of stones (in this case large Australian bush rocks) a rough cross and a serviceman's hat. In the lower section there is a single large bush rock.
  • Several rose gardens.

2009 refurbishments

In 2007, it was noted the Liverpool District War Memorial (originally dedicated 6 November 1965) was deteriorating and was in a less than desirable state. The reflection pool was leaking and was permanently empty. Repair was explored, but ultimately it was decided a new memorial would be a better option.

The new Liverpool Regional War Memorial was unveiled in 2009 and consists of two blade walls in an L-shape configuration. The first wall bears the words “Lest we forget”, with the insignia for the Australian Army, the Air Force, Navy and Merchant Marines. The second wall contains the names of all the campaigns undertaken by the Armed Forces.

A ceremonial footpath is flanked by two low granite pillars which bear the plaques from the original memorial.  The new memorial is planned to more effectively hold up to 4,000 people at ceremonies such as Anzac Day.

Korean War Memorial (Cenotaph)

In 2015, a sandstone monument for the Korean War was established in the Liverpool District War Memorial precinct. It has been described as a cenotaph as it commemorates the 43 men who were lost in action in the Korean War and never returned.

This pillar was erected by Liverpool Sub-branch Aust. Legion of Ex-Servicemen and Women and dedicated by Lt. Gen. F.H. Berryman C.B., C.B.E., D.S.O. Jubilee Year 1951. H.J. Gill Town Clerk. Ald. R.A. Dunbier Mayor.

This pillar was erected by Liverpool Sub-branch returned Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen's Imperial League of Australia and dedicated by Lt. Gen. F.H. Berryman C.B., C.B.E., D.S.O. Jubilee Year 1951. H.J. Gill Town Clerk. Ald. R.A. Dunbier Mayor.

“This pillar replaces the original memorial pillars erected by public subscription in Memorial Avenue near Macquarie Street. The two marble plaques erected here are from the original pillars'.

60 years since the victory in the Pacific 1945

This plaque is dedicated to the memory of all the men and women who gave up their youth to serve their country in the battles against the invaders of the Pacific area during World War 2.

The war that ended 60 years ago on 14th August 1945.

May their sacrifices be remembered forever by those who today enjoy the freedom provided by their efforts.

This Plaque was unveiled by Sir William Yeo. C.B.E. State President R.S.S.& A.I.L.A. 6th November 1965 to commemorate the dedication of the Liverpool District War Memorial. The Memorial Fountain portrays a battlefield grave with its cairn of stones, rough cross and serviceman's hat. The slouch hat being used as it is symbolic of the Australian fighting man. The sunken pool is the pool of remembrance.
