Annandale Mayor F. E. W. Smith's sons Harold Edward Benjamin and his brother Roy Alfred Walter were wounded on 8 Oct 1917. Harold died that day, and Roy succumbed to his wounds seven days later (Amanda & Darryn Capes-Davis 29/12/2012). A younger brother Charles William married at Saint Aidens on "the bouquet being of sweet pens and Hiles of the valley, tied with the battalion colours of the bridegroom's late brother" (1918 'WEDDING.', The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW:1842-1954), 16 December, p. 4, viewed 31 December, 2012.)

At Christmas 1918, Mayor Alderman F. E. W. Smith) Alderman A. E. Packer and Mr. J.
