Returned to Australia on 09/02/1916, but later died of disease incurred during the Gallipoli campaign on 23/02/1945.
His surname was incorrectly spelt as Caolsson on the embarkation nominal roll (24/5/1915). His surname had two variations during his lifetime: Carlson or Carlsson. Likewise, his second name had variations: Gustav, Gustaf.
He listed his place of birth as South Woodburn on the Attestation Paper. He was actually born in Glebe (Sydney). Some websites dedicated to the Anzacs have listed his next of kin, Anders Frank Carlsson, as his father. Anders was actually his brother.
He returned to Sydney on 13 March 1916 (HMAT Nestor) due to enteric fever, but was returned to duty on 14 June 1916. He was allocated to the 19th Reinforcements, 1st Battalion, but was discharged as medically unfit on 18 August 1916.
