The memorial fountain is made from white marble imported from Italy and sits on a concrete base in the centre of a small lawn. Above this base there are four stages. The fourth or lowest stage is square with diagonal buttresses of modified classical profile. It has a dedication inscription which reads 'To our soldiers in South Africa 1899-1902', the location names, 'Kimberley', 'Ladysmith' and 'Mafeking', and the contractor's name Mr J. Dudgeon. The third stage, a bowl, sits directly on the fourth stage, the profile being a combination of Egyptian and Classical forms. The upper half of the memorial is symbolic of victory and displays the imagery of war. Pilaster like gun barrels support a capital of Classical profile, the north and south sides having crossed rifles draped with flags and wreaths. Surmounting the capital are flags of victory raised above cannon balls, shell cases and hats. The memorial was erected in the second week of January 1902.
