Herbert Frederick Gordon Clark was born on 20 June 1919 in Bowenfels NSW. He enlisted in the AIF on 22 July 1940. He served as a Sapper in the 27th Maintenance Platoon Royal Australian Engineers, and gained his qualification as a refrigeration mechanic. During 1943-1945, Clark served at Milne Bay in New Guinea and at Morotai, an island in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) that was a key staging point for Australian Operations in Borneo and US operations in the Philippines.

Herbert was discharged from the Army on  5 December 1945. He married Stella Alice Sadler. He passed away on 25 May 1999 at the age of 79.
