Angus served in the 1st New Zealand Expeditionary Force in the First World War, serving nearly four years in Western Europe. He returned to New Zealand in 1919, and migrated to NSW in Australia some years later.

He also served in the Australian Army in the Second World War from 1940-1942, but did not leave Australia during this service. He served as a Sergeant trainer for Vickers Machine Guns. He was discharged on 29 April 1942.
