Private McNally returned to Australia aboard the transport "Derbyshire", arriving in Melbourne on 17 April 1919. He then proceeded to Sydney where he was discharged form the AIF on 2 June 1919. During his service on the Western Front, he was wounded in action in September 1917 and then gassed in August 1918.
